If you are looking for an alternative source to cow’s milk or goat’s milk to get calcium and vitamin D – check out Hemp’s milk and Hazelnut milk. I’ve been trying a combination of Hemp’s milk and Hazelnut milk in lieu of cow’s milk without sacrificing the “key” nutrients that led us to drink milk in the first place. In fact, Hemp’s milk has MORE calcium and vitamin D content per serving than cow’s milk, with none of the lactose intolerant side effects (gas, bloating). For those of you looking at a casein free, gluten free diet, you may be already using rice milk, almond milk, or soy milk. Now there are 2 additional alternatives you can add to the mix.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released its review of the safety events surrounding heart burn drugs Prilosec and Nexium to see whether these drugs increase the risks of heart attacks. Earlier in the year, the manufacturer of these drugs sent FDA long term study data looking at the treatment of severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with Prilosec or Nexium.
An “Early Communication of an Ongoing Safety Review” of these drugs was released in August 2007 by the FDA, which found no increased risk of heart problems when using these drugs long-term. Additional safety information was submitted by the manufacturer and the FDA has conducted a comprehensive review of safety information relating to these drugs. Based on the FDA’s assessment it has concluded that long term use of Prilosec or Nexium is not likely to be linked to an increased risk of heart problems, and that health care providers can continue to prescribe these drugs to patients within the approved labeling. DrinkFiber.com visitor Barb commented on one of my entries and shared her experience with Citrucel. Unfortunately for Barb, she is experiencing what appears to be painful gas and bloating with Citrucel.
I have not had personal experience with bloating or gas with Citrucel, whereas I’ve had these issues with Metamucil. Citrucel and Metamucil uses different types of bulking agents to aid regularity. Some people may experience side effects with the type of bulking agent used in Citrucel versus that used in Metamucil.
According to WebMD, Citrucel’s side effects included gas and bloating:
Citrucel Oral Side Effects
Bloating, gas, or stomach cramps may occur. These effects usually decrease with smaller doses. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.If your doctor has prescribed this medication, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people who use this medication correctly do not have serious side effects.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, that may indicate a more serious condition, stop using this medication and tell your doctor immediately: rectal bleeding, bloody stools, sweating, fast heartbeat, weakness, dizziness, fainting.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
These side effects were also confirmed by information from MayoClinic.com, which advised against long term use because of a potential for dependency on these agents for bowel function. However, as you can read from Ms. Cathy Glidden’s comment below, the website also states that “There’s no evidence that long-term use of fiber supplements — such as Metamucil, Konsyl or Citrucel — is harmful.”
Barb, given the above information, you may want to take a smaller dose and see if your side effect experience improves. Try reducing it to half a tablespoon with the same amount of water. You will also want to let your doctor know that you are experiencing these side effects, and he or she may very well suggest another fiber supplementation or bulking agent. There are so many options on market today, there’s no reason for you to put up with pain and discomfort – especially when pain and discomfort were probably the reasons why you first sought fiber therapy!
