MiraLax is currently approved for treating occasional constipation. Reuters Health reported that over-the-counter MiraLax (polyethylene glycol 3350) is safe and effective compared with placebo for use for up to 6 months in patients with chronic constipation. This was based on a clinical study of 304 patients with chronic constipation. The results were published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. At 6 months, 52% of patients receiving MiraLax and 11% of patients receiving placeob reported relief from their constipation. Side effects of MiraLax included diarrhea, flatulence and nausea.
